ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL
Wednesday, December 12
1. Curricular documents
Approved as is.
2. Distributed Learning Policy
This policy had been approved by the Faculty Senate. It was approved by the Academic Affairs Council, to be sent on to President Karnig for his approval.
3. Academic Master Plan
a. There are various interpretations as to the role of the Educational Policy Committee in this process. It appears that its role should be to offer a recommendation and not a binding vote.
b. Items on the Academic Master Plan are to be viewed as placeholders and not as guaranteed programs.
c. Clarification is needed from Jerry Pritchard regarding Special Session and joint Ph.D.s. Should these be on the list?
4. Vice President’s Council
Dr. Fernandez reported on key issues brought up at the Vice President’s Council:
a. Regarding budget cuts, the state is thinking of spreading any shortfall over two years so that the cuts will be smaller should the economy take an upswing.
b. Staff HRs across the system are asking for training on how to handle staff layoffs in the case of a 10% cut.
c. Thought is being given to suspending CMS or giving each campus autonomy in their decision to implement the SA module or not. (The cost of that implementation alone general runs several millions of dollars.)
d. Consideration is being given to raising fees and/or taxes. Governor Davis is opposed, but it is a viable solution.
e. Mr. DeMauro is saying that the University may not know its budget until November this next year (after the election). We will need to come up with a tight schedule for Fall.
f. Our campus is looking at enforcing application deadlines in an effort to control enrollment.
5. Budget Cut
1.4% to be identified by January. The division of Academic Affairs’ share was reduced to 75% of what we expected it to be.
a. Deans (in consultation with their chairs) need to come up with a plan for the expected cut, including the source of the cut and the impact.
b. Olga will send numbers to each college dean reflecting the new scenario (75% of what was originally expected).
The next meeting of the Academic Affairs Council will be Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at 10:00 a.m.
