ANNOUNCEMENTS
C. Caballero distributed a proposed Policy for Cubicle Use. Suggested changes should be sent to him soon.
O. Morales distributed information on the upcoming Commencement.
P. Vicknair distributed information on faculty compensation increases and explained how the compensation pool from the system office is not enough to cover the increases, thus costing the campus.
E. Yasuhara distributed a position announcement for a new Liberal Studies Coordinator.
J. Monaghan needs 8 faculty to test the digital marketplace prototype. Deans should let him know if any faculty are interested in participating.
S. Kamusikiri announced that there are 40 students presenting at the Student Research Competition this coming Friday.
S. Freund discussed a proposal to take over a cable channel to establish an education consortium. He is in hopes this will happen by September.
There will be a test of the Burbee system on June 16 at 9:30 a.m.
A telecommuting policy for staff will be presented to the President as a concept.
L. Fernandez distributed information on the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for new Americans.
Information on LEAP was also distributed.
He also reported on recruiting of faculty for this year. 17 position have been filled, 11 searches were closed. There are some still open and deans need to report the status on those.
CLICKERS R. SANTIAGO
CPS is the recommended clicker for this campus. R. Santiago distributed the justification. Unfortunately, all clickers failed the accessibility VPAT, so CPS will be given one year to comply. Meanwhile, SSD feels that they can make a temporary accommodation. Beth Jaworski should be contacted regarding accessibility issues.
A clicker policy will need to be formulated.
R. Santiago will work with the bookstore ASAP and L. Fernandez will inform the President. Once it’s official, CPS clicker software will be downloaded to all smart carts and a support website will be created.
BUDGETS L. FERNANDEZ
L. Fernandez distributed the latest Hiring Freeze Procedure policy.
A worksheet template was also distributed. Olga will send to each of the deans the numbers for a “worst case” cut and a “best case” cut, plus what deans can expect to get back. Deans are asked not to automatically cut sections, since we also need to make target. Classes need to be protected in this process. Worksheets must be received before any requests to fill positions (since May 22) will be approved, or at the very latest by June 17. As for hiring tenure track culty, there will be no new lines during the coming year.
CURRICULAR ITEMS J. ZORN/E. YASUHARA
The English “stretch proposal” was considered, after having been passed by the Faculty Senate after amendment by the senate. This proposal adds four extra units to those required toward graduation, although pedagogically it is considered to be beneficial for students. A vote was taken and the results were 8 for (as is) and 6 against. L. Fernandez will present the proposal to the President.
THESES AND PROJECTS S. KAMUSIKIRI
An addition to the existing policy was proposed to clearly state that, should a thesis or project be deemed incomplete in any way, the Graduate Dean will return the incomplete project to the student’s project chair, committee, department chair and college dean, who will determine how the student will bring the project in line with Title 5. Once complete and approved by the project committee, chair and dean, the project can be resubmitted.
This amendment was approved unanimously.
