Preferred candidates will be expected to meet the traditional requirements of excellence in teaching, active scholarly and professional work, and service to the University and community. In addition, new faculty are encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the University's strategic plan. This plan emphasizes three areas: a) alternative modes of instructional delivery to include off-campus and distance learning; b) the learning process, i.e., innovative teaching strategies and/or research on how students learn and apply knowledge over an extended period of time; and c) partnership with the community to enhance social, economic, and cultural conditions.


 

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND LETTERS 

 

Department of Art (three positions)

 

Assistant Professor. Art History – 20th Century and Contemporary Art. Ph.D. in Art History with a specialization in 20th Century and Contemporary Art. University teaching beyond graduate level teaching assistant. Ability to teach western and world survey and a wide-range of upper-division art history courses for undergraduate and studio art graduate students. Knowledge of theory and criticism essential. Knowledge of History of Photography and History of Graphic Design desirable.

Assistant Professor. Ceramics. M.F.A. in Ceramics. University teaching beyond graduate level teaching assistant, familiarity with contemporary directions in art, and significant exhibition record required. Ability to manage a ceramics program, teaching a wide range of aesthetic, conceptual and technical aspects of ceramics, including hand building, throwing, mold making and slip casting, clay and glaze calculation and kiln construction. Department of Communication Studies (2 positions)

 

Assistant or Associate Professor (one may be at the Associate rank).  Ability to teach in two or more of the following areas: public relations; Latino/a international media; media policy; conflict resolution and/or alternative dispute resolution; consulting; training and development; and/or social justice. Experience in departmental curriculum assessment is a plus. The Department is seeking candidates who appreciate the place of their specialization in the broader study of communication and who can apply their perspectives in multicultural contexts. Evidence of teaching excellence and scholarship/creativity activity is required. A completed Ph.D. in Communication is required at the time of appointment.

Department of English (one position)

 

Assistant Professor. Poetry Writing. A terminal degree, M.F.A. or Ph.D., is required at the time of appointment. Candidates should have a first-rate record of poetry publication and, preferably, a secondary specialization in the history of the English language, medieval literature, or children's literature. Tenure-track faculty normally teach three classes per quarter, including both upper and lower-division courses.

Department of Music (Three positions)

 

Assistant Professor. Vocal/Choral Music/Music Education. Earned doctorate required at the time of appointment. This person will assist the Director of Vocal Studies in development of all areas of the program. Responsibilities will include: promoting, developing and recruiting for the Musical Theater Emphasis, conducting the Show Choir/Vocal Jazz Ensemble, teaching applied voice, voice class, possibly choral conducting and/or choral literature and general music education courses, and assisting with the production of the annual Music Department Gala. Other qualifications include evidence of success as a choral conductor at the university level or equivalent experience. Teaching experience at the high school level is desirable.

Department Chair.  Searching for a fulltime, tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Music, part of whose assigned duty will be to chair the department for at least one term of three years, with the possibility of renewal. The appointment will start September of 2006, earlier start date possible. The area of specialization within Music is open. The chair appointment is at twelve-month two-thirds; the chair typically teaches one course per quarter in her/his area of specialization. The Chair of the Department of Music provides leadership for a very active and growing department within the College of Arts and Letters. Specific duties will include administrative responsibilities such as managing and developing departmental budgets, scheduling of classes, hiring adjunct faculty, presiding at departmental meetings, etc., as well as teaching one class per quarter in the candidate’s area of expertise. Additionally, the Department seeks a Chair who will, in conjunction with the College Dean, articulate a dynamic vision for the department to lead the program to regional and national prominence; model and promote standards of excellence in teaching, professional development, and service; coordinate collaborative academic and artistic efforts and outreach within the university and local communities; provide leadership in fund raising for the department; recruit and retain high quality students; continue the development of a dynamic faculty. Assistant Professor. Director of Band (primary)/Music Education. The Director of Bands is responsible for the artistic, administrative, and visionary leadership of the university wind and percussion program. Duties: conduct the Symphonic Band and Chamber Winds; studio teaching in area of expertise; teach courses in conducting, literature and instrumental and/or general music education; oversee the basketball pep band. Active participation in recruitment, outreach, fundraising, and public relations activities is expected. An earned doctorate is required at the time of appointment.

Department of Philosophy (one position)

 

Assistant Professor. Non-Western Philosophy or Philosophy of Mind or Philosophical Logic. Ph.D. prior to appointment. Ability to teach world religions or in one of the other areas of specialization preferred. The department seeks persons engaged not just in historical or comparative study, but also in rigorous philosophical analysis of the views involved.

Department of Theatre Arts (two positions)

 

Assistant Professor. Theatre Criticism and Literature. Duties include teaching courses in theatre history and/or classical and contemporary literary genres, and Introduction to Theatre. Desirable secondary areas of expertise include but are not limited to: Performance studies, Acting, Voice and/or Movement, Choreography, World Dance Traditions, Classical Theatre, Shakespeare, Latino/a Theatre, Chicano/a Theatre, Drama Education, Children’s Theatre. We seek candidates with a an understanding of theatre as a collaborative art form, who value a comprehensive curriculum that leads to well-rounded students experienced in both the theory and practice of theatre. Assistant Professor. Stage Design: Costume, etc. Duties include: designing for university productions; teaching Costume Design and Construction, Stage Makeup, and design/technical courses in at least one other aspect of stage design; teaching occasional theatre classes in the University’s General Education package. We seek candidates with an understanding of theatre as a collaborative art form, who value a comprehensive curriculum that leads to well-rounded students experienced in both the theory and practice of theatre. Department of World Languages and Literatures (three positions)

 

Assistant Professor.  Spanish. (two positions)  Ph.D. required at the time of appointment and native or near native proficiency in Spanish. Spanish Generalists with interest in two or more of the following: Linguistics, Peninsular or Latin American Literature, Language Acquisition, Pedagogy, Hispanic Studies. The department is looking for energetic and enterprising candidates who will contribute to the growth of the department while teaching Spanish at all levels, including courses in the MA program. Experience in student-centered teaching and the ability to relate well to a diverse, multi-ethic student body is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of successful professional development.

 

Assistant Professor. French and Arabic. Ph.D., native or near native proficiency in Arabic, and advanced to native proficiency in French are required. The department is looking for energetic and enterprising candidates who will contribute to the growth of the department, coordinate the Arabic program and teach both Arabic and French. Experience in student-centered teaching and the ability to relate well to a diverse, multi-ethic student body is essential. Department of Accounting and Finance (two positions)

 

Associate Professor or Professor. Department Chair. Preferred candidates will be expected to provide academic and administrative leadership to achieve the mission and goals of the Department, College and University. Specific responsibilities include: representation of the department, curriculum development and administration, budget and resource allocation, assignment and supervision of faculty and staff, support of advancing the college’s AACSB accreditation; b) promotion of collegial and cooperative working relations, adherence to high academic standards, appreciation of faculty governance, facilitation of the orderly conduct of the affairs of the Department, College and University; and c) promotion of partnerships with the business and professional communities and other major stakeholders of the College and work to provide external support. Eligibility for tenure and appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor, a demonstrated record of scholarly output and effective teaching, and an earned doctorate (consideration will be given to professionally-qualified candidates in accounting, finance, or real estate according to AACSB standards) are required. Department of Management (one position)

 

Rank is open with Assistant or Associate Professor preferred. Entrepreneurship.  A doctorate is required at the time of appointment. Candidate should be able to teach entrepreneurship at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as general management. It is expected that the person filling this position will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and have a viable research program related to entrepreneurship. Reassignment of two courses per quarter will be given for the incumbent to serve as Director of the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship within the College of Business and Public Administration for the duration of three years. Involvement in the advising of majors in the department and serving on college and university-wide committees is also expected. Candidates must have demonstrated teaching excellence, and evidence of publication record or strong development of a stream of research. Preferred candidates will have a proven track record in the administration of a center for entrepreneurship that has effectively served its region. A starting date as early as Winter Quarter of 2006 is possible.

Department of Health Science and Human Ecology (three positions)

 

Associate Professor or Professor. Health Care Management; Department Chair. The Department of Health Science and Human Ecology, California State University, San Bernardino, California is accepting applications for a tenure track associate professor/professor for an interdisciplinary program in health care management, health science and public health to serve as Department Chair. The successful candidate will possess a doctorate degree in health services administration, management or related disciplines. Professional experience in health care delivery or public health is desirable. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to continue a program of research, teaching and university/community service expected for successful tenure and promotion. The successful candidate will serve as a half time Department Chair and teach health services administration and health science courses in the MSHSA and MPH graduate programs as well several undergraduate programs.

 

Assistant or Associate Professor.  Environmental Health/Industrial Hygiene.  Candidates should have general expertise in several areas of Public Health and specific expertise in Environmental Health Science/Industrial Hygiene.  A doctorate degree is required with a major in Environmental Health Science, Industrial Hygiene, or other appropriate field.  Preference will be given to a candidate who is qualified to become a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.  A history of grant writing and grant funded research and/or demonstration projects is desirable. 

 

Assistant Professor. Health Care Adminstration/Management. The Department of Health Science and Human Ecology, California State University, San Bernardino, California is accepting applications for a tenure track assistant professor for the health services administration program. The successful candidate will possess a doctorate degree in a health administration related discipline and professional experience in health care delivery or public health. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to establish a program of research, teaching and university/community service expected for successful tenure and promotion. The successful candidate will teach courses in the MSHSA graduate program and the undergraduate program and supervise masters theses and residencies.

Department of Kinesiology (one position)

 

Assistant Professor. Pedagogy. Earned doctorate in Kinesiology/Physical Education with a specialization in Pedagogical Kinesiology or related area is required.  Successful candidates will teach in Pedagogical Kinesiology and correlate areas (viz. Adapted Physical Education, History and Philosophy, Lifetime Fitness, Motor Development, Motor Control, Biomechanics, Measurement and Evaluation, etc.). Additionally, the candidate will teach courses activity courses. Scholarly activities are expected.  An ability to develop a profile of extramural funding is desirable.  The candidate also will advise students and serve on department, college and university committees. A documented commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level is expected. Knowledge of research on effective teaching behaviors is expected. College level teaching experience also is preferred.

Department of Nursing (four positions)

Rank Open. (three positions) Doctorate in Nursing or a Masters in Nursing with a Doctorate in a related field are strong preferred. Candidates must be qualified to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level in two or more of the following areas of specialization: Community/Public Health, Research, Leadership and Management, Medical/Surgical, and Maternal/Child are of particular interest, but applications are welcome in all areas of nursing knowledge. Secondarily, experience in Pediatrics, Psych-Mental Health and/or Nursing Issues and Trends is a plus. Candidates for the rank of Professor must have an exceptional research and teaching record. Other candidates must show outstanding research and teaching potential. Experiences with program development, distance education, federally funded grants and demonstrated leadership in academic settings are an advantage. Candidates must be qualified to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level with a preference for Management, Research, Nursing Issues and Trends, Theory, Community/Public Health or Medical/Surgical nursing. Candidates will have a record of agency and academia collaboration with the goals of furthering health and advancing professional nursing in the surrounding communities. Candidates will have exceptional leadership experience with demonstrated research and teaching competence and are active in professional organizations. Additional desired competencies include experiences with program development, distance education and federally funded grants. The Department is seeking visionary candidates who can provide academic and administrative leadership to achieve the mission and goals of the Department, College and University. COLLEGE OF SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

 

Department of History (two positions)

 

Assistant Professor. African History.  Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. A minor field in the Atlantic world is especially desirable. The successful candidate will teach a variety of upper-division courses in African history and the Atlantic World, and also teach lower-division World History courses. S/he also will produce scholarly research and provide service to the university and the community.

 

Assistant Professor. Public/Oral History. Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. Teaching/research expertise in California strongly preferred. The successful candidate will teach upper-division courses in Public/Oral and California history, lower-division survey courses in US and California history. And require topical curriculum according to department needs. S/he will help direct student internships, produce scholarly research, and provide service to the university and community.

Department of Psychology (two positions)

 

Assistant or Associate Professor. Human Development. Full-time tenure track position, serving half-time as Director of the Institute of Child Development and Family Relations (ICDFR) and half-time as a faculty member in Human Development.  The ICDFR, houses in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, is dedicated to promoting the optimal development of children and their families through our Infant/Toddler Laboratory School, Family and Parenting Resource Center, and the Child Assessment  & Development Center.  As a member of the Human Development Program, the successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in Family Studies, Lifespan Development, and/or Child Development. An individual with interest in and/or knowledge of multi-cultural issues in Child or Lifespan Development is preferred. Candidates will be responsible for developing and teaching courses at the undergraduate Master’s level pertaining to their area of expertise and supervising undergraduate and graduate research. A doctorate in Child Development, Human Development, or a related field is required. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and generation of external funding.

 

Assistant Professor. Social/Personality Psychologist. Areas of expertise may include cross cultural psychology or forensics. The successful applicant will develop and teach undergraduate courses in their area of expertise as well as core psychology and methods course in the applicant’s primary content area of training. Strong research potential, including the intent to apply for extramural funding, as well as service to the University and community is expected. We are especially interested in applicants who will supervise undergraduate and graduate research. A Ph.D. in Psychology with a content area in Social/Personality psychology is required.

Department of Social Work (one position)

 

Assistant Professor.  Micro Practice.   Micro practice with a generalist perspective. Specific expertise in mental health is preferred but not required. This is an opportunity for an ambitious person to play a role in instruction and curriculum development in an M.S.W. program that has just been reaffirmed with a completely redesigned curriculum and a new B.A.S.W. program that is in candidacy. A commitment to field education is expected as well as an ability to conduct research, generate grants and teach courses at the M.S.W. and B.A.S.W. levels. M.S.W. and Ph.D./D.S.W. in Social Work or related field required. Two years post-MSW direct practice experience required. Clinical License preferred.
